The massage candle concept

Now that we have covered the steps for creating whipped wax, let’s take a closer look at the massage candle concept. Candle massage is a massage technique that has been getting a modern makeover in recent years, although many hurdles make these cosmetics harder to bring to market.

It is all about well-being, softness and lightness. It offers a physically and psychologically soothing experience for the person receiving it. A massage candle contains pure oils that nourish and soften your skin while giving it more elasticity (no less!).

Choosing the wax: go for soy wax!

The main raw material in a massage candle is soy wax, which has a low melting point (50°C) and is also suitable for use on the skin. Adding oil and/or butter lowers the melting point by a few more degrees.

We recommend using soy wax for container candles (C3). It is 100% soy. We also recommend coconut oil, which gives the wax a smooth glide, and shea butter, which nourishes your skin for a truly cocooning moment.

A candle massage recipe made with love

You will need 4 ingredients, a container and a plant-based waxed wick. Make the job easier with our handy accessories.

What you need:

  • 60% C3 soy wax for container candles
  • 24% organic coconut oil
  • 14% shea butter
  • 2% Monoï fragrance from Grasse
  • Container
  • Plant-based waxed wick (choose it according to the size of your container)

Making your massage candle

Enough theory, time to get hands-on!

  1. In a bowl, melt the soy wax, coconut oil and shea butter.
  2. Place your plant-based waxed wick in the centre of your container.
  3. Once the mixture reaches 76°C, take your bowl off the heat and add the Monoï fragrance oil. Stir for about 2 minutes.
  4. When your mixture is between 70 and 73°C, pour it between the side of the container and the wick, without touching the wick.
  5. Leave to cool at room temperature for a few hours...

Here is another way to make your massage candle if you don’t have any shea butter:

How do you use a massage candle?

Can’t wait? Then light your candle! A few minutes later, once the melt pool around the wick is wide enough, blow out your candle.

Check the temperature, then pour the melted soy wax onto the part of the body to be massaged.

For example, after a lovely candlelit dinner, treat yourselves to this moment of utter relaxation, with mainly floral, fruity notes and a light hint of coconut... Just the thing to soothe body and mind and recharge in a tender moment together.

Recommendations for use

You can change the fragrance oil, but always check the recommended dosage for category 5A in the IFRA certificate (available in the “Compliance” tab of each of our fragrance pages) for leave-on skin application.

As with any product applied to the skin, we recommend doing a patch test first in the crook of your elbow, to make sure you are not allergic to any of your candle’s ingredients. It would be a shame for all that effort to turn into a nightmare!

If you are thinking of selling massage candles, we advise you to look into the rules first. Massage candles are classed as cosmetic products and are subject to very strict regulations. It is essential to have your product tested under the supervision of an allergist.

Mandatory information on the container

The container of your massage candle must display several mandatory items of information, written in French if you sell in France:

  • Name and address of the manufacturer.
  • Full list of ingredients (INCI nomenclature).
  • Date of minimum durability or period after opening (PAO).

In France, failure to comply with the regulations is punishable by 2 years’ imprisonment and a fine of up to €30,000.

You can find more information on the regulations in force for selling your massage candles on the Légifrance and Eur-Lex websites.
