From Geneva, Patricia shares her passion for candles through Miaou Candle. Every creation is carefully thought out, from the soy wax to the natural fragrances, to offer a product that is wholesome, beautiful and true to her values.
Her candles are made for people who want to enjoy the warmth and charm of a handcrafted candle, far removed from mass-produced alternatives, an approach also shared by Scarly Shop.
The full written interview with the candle maker
“My name is Patricia, and I’m the creator and founder of Miaou Candle in Geneva.
I decided to get into candles for several reasons. First of all, because it’s something creative, something beautiful. A candle is an object that brings light, that brings comfort in winter and even on summer evenings. For me, what matters is creating a candle made from wholesome ingredients.”
What made you want to offer an alternative to mass-produced candles?
“I noticed that the candles sold in supermarkets, mostly made with paraffin or synthetic fragrances, didn’t match my values or what I was looking for at all. I was set on using high-quality products. That’s why I turned to soy wax, and to fragrances from Grasse made with natural aromas.
I buy most of my fragrances from Terre de Bougies, and every component of my candle is carefully considered. The wicks are lead-free cotton, and I thought there must surely be other people for whom these things would be extremely important.”
What were your main challenges with candle labelling, and how did Avery help you overcome them?
“Becoming a professional candle maker also means complying with strict European labelling standards, especially when it comes to safety labels. Thanks to Avery, I was able to simplify this tedious, painstaking part of the work.
Labelling a candle is really important. It’s the first thing a customer looks at when they pick up your product. For me, the challenge was finding the right balance between meeting mandatory labelling standards and preserving the look of the candle.”
So, why Miaou Candle?
“Because the idea is that a cat curled up beside you and a candle make for the ultimate cosy moment! And also because at least everyone remembers Miaou. It’s simple.”
What gives you the most satisfaction in your work as a candle maker?
“What I love most is the contact with customers, because you build real connections. People come back because they’re happy with the product. People also come back because they’re happy to see me. I can create anything, the possibilities are endless. If I could make every idea that comes to me, I think it would take me a lifetime, because I’m constantly coming up with new ones!”
