Adding a touch of fragrance to enclosed spaces has never been easier. Hang one on a coat hanger in your wardrobe, tuck one between piles of linen in a drawer or place one discreetly in a chest of drawers. What's more, the list of equipment and ingredients you need to make them is short.
They make a wonderful gift for your loved ones, in the same spirit as Snapbar scented wax melts.
What ingredients do you need to make scented wax hangers?
Good news: anyone can make scented wax hangers!
All you need is a few essential ingredients:
- Wax for wax melts or moulded candles
- Candle fragrance oil
- A mould
- Raffia or string to hang your creations
You can then add a few creative extras:
- One or more dyes
- Decorations: dried flowers, mini wax melts set into the hanger, biodegradable glitter
The equipment you need to make scented wax hangers is almost exactly the same as for a scented wax melt.
More good news: once the fragrance has faded, your hangers can easily be turned into wax melts. Just make sure you remove the decorations first, or use a flame retardant for dried flowers and dried plants, so that the flowers don't catch fire when you melt your DIY creations.
Which wax should I use for my scented wax hangers?
Make sure you choose a wax for moulded candles or wax melts. Let's compare the different waxes so you can make your choice:
Soy wax
Easy to work with and fully compatible with fragrances and dyes, this plant-based wax is ideal for beginners. Its main advantage? Excellent value for money, making it an affordable option to get started. Bear in mind, though, that it is less suited to making wax melts because of its texture once it has cooled.
Rapeseed wax
Creamier and a little more technical to work with, rapeseed wax has a naturally oilier texture that gives an excellent scent throw while holding on to the fragrance very effectively.
Coconut and olive wax
Perfect for making wax hangers and wax tablets, these waxes give an outstanding finish: smooth and glossy, with no flaws or frosting. They guarantee a neat, premium result while enhancing the fragrance. They are the go-to choice for makers looking for a flawless finish.
Paraffin wax
Its pliable texture is pleasant to handle and makes it ideal for bespoke creations. It blends easily with your favourite fragrances and dyes, giving you complete creative freedom.
Thanks to its even, steady, residue-free burn, it delivers a balanced scent throw and a soft glow, for a refined and complete sensory experience.
Beeswax
Beeswax is not suitable for making scented wax hangers, as it is not compatible with plastic moulds.
Key takeaway: we recommend coconut wax and olive wax for making your scented wax hangers.
Choosing your mould
To shape your scented wax hangers, opt for silicone moulds designed specifically for wax hangers. After pouring, leave your wax to cool for a few hours at room temperature, then carefully unmould. To keep your moulds spotless, a simple wipe with isopropyl alcohol is all it takes.
At Terre de Bougies, we offer silicone moulds for scented wax hangers in a variety of shapes.

Choosing your fragrance
To scent your wax hangers, make sure you only use compatible fragrance oils, such as fragrances specially designed for candles and wax melts.
- For classic fragrances, the recommended dosage is between 10% and 15%, to be adjusted according to the intensity you want and your own tests.
- With 100% naturally derived fragrances, their unique sensory richness means you can reduce the dosage to just 7 to 10%.
- As for Boost fragrances, a concentration of just 1% can be enough to deliver an intense scent. You cut your costs while keeping exceptional quality, and can multiply your production by 10.
To help you with your creations, we provide a handy dosage calculator so you get a balanced, perfectly scented result with every pour.
Choosing your dye
Fancy adding a touch of colour to your scented wax hangers? You have several options: dye chips, liquid dyes or natural mica powder for a subtle, elegant pearly effect.
Here are our recommended dosages:
- Dye chips: about 5 g per kg of wax
- Liquid dyes: up to 15 g per kg of wax
- Mineral mica powder: 2 to 3 g maximum per 100 g of wax
For the best results, we always recommend running a few tests first. The concentration, the type of wax and the fragrance can all slightly affect the final colour.
Why not decorate them?
Personalise your wax hangers with:
- Biodegradable glitter
- Mineral stones
- Dried flowers
- Decorations made from mini wax melts, such as little hearts, flowers or butterflies
Make your own scented wax hangers
The perfect scented wax hanger recipe, explained step by step.
What you need:
- Hexagonal or round wax hanger mould
- 90% wax for moulded candles or wax melts
- 10% candle fragrance oil of your choice
- Thermometer
- Scales
- String or raffia
- Beaker
- Heat gun or hairdryer
Optional: dried flowers, mica powder.
The steps to follow:
1. Melt the wax until it reaches a temperature of 75°C.
2. Add the fragrance once the wax reaches 75°C. Stir gently for about 2 minutes so that the fragrance blends thoroughly into the wax.

3. When the mixture has cooled to around 65°C, pour it gently into your moulds. Leave to cool at room temperature for 2 to 3 hours, until fully set.

4. Prepare your decorations. For this creation we chose dried flowers, but let your creativity run free!

5. Check that the wax has fully set. Using a heat gun, gently warm the surface to help the decorations stick.

6. Arrange your decorations, pressing lightly to fix them to the surface.

7. Add a touch of sparkle with a little mica in the colour of your choice.

8. If you want to hang your creation, thread a piece of string, ribbon or raffia through the hole provided.

Making your wax hangers last longer
To keep your scented wax hangers intact and preserve their fragrance, proper storage is essential. By protecting them from light, heat and moisture, you extend their lifespan while keeping their good looks and scent intensity.
Our storage tips
- Wrap each hanger individually, especially if you made them in silicone moulds. Use paper bags or suitable packaging to stop them getting scratched or picking up other smells.
- Store them flat in an airtight container to keep their shape and avoid any change to the fragrance.
- Keep them in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight to preserve the intensity and longevity of the fragrance.
- Don't mix them together, especially if they have different scents, to avoid the fragrances interfering with one another.
- Don't place your hangers near a direct heat source, as they could melt slightly or the fragrance could evaporate too quickly.
Give them a second life as wax melts
When the fragrance of your hanger starts to fade, give it a second life by turning it into a scented wax melt. Simply melt it in a wax warmer to enjoy its fragrance notes one last time.
If the hangers you want to melt have decorations on them, make sure you remove them first, or use a flame retardant for dried flowers and dried plants, so that the flowers don't catch fire when you melt your DIY creations.
Conclusion
Making your own scented wax hangers brings together creativity, fragrance and practicality. Both decorative and fragrant, they suit any space and reflect your personal style. They make a wonderful gift, tucked into a gift box or given on any occasion!
